A709 Grade 50 steel grade is a high strength low alloy structural carbon steel used in building bridge projects.
ASTM A709 covers the requirements for structural steel for bridges. Grade 50 steel of this specification requires a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi.
Machinability of Grade 50 steel is fair. It is an alloy steel and thus tougher to machine than ordinary plain carbon steel. Grade 50 behaves similar to AISI 8615 alloy steel in regard to machining.
A709 is the specification used for steel plate used in the manufacture of bridges. Chapel Steel stocks A709 Grade 36, A709 Grade 50 and A709 Grade 50W.
