A588 Grade A steel is high-strength low-alloy structural steel. A588 Grade A steel plate is suitable for welded, riveted, bolted construction, but intended primarily for used in welded bridges and buildings.

In comparison with A572 Grade 50, A588 Grade A steel’s advantage is its weathering ability, which provides atmospheric corrosion resistance and ultimately longer life in applications where exposure to elements will be a factor.
A588 Grade A weathering grade is often used in unpainted applications such as bridges, utility sign/poles and highway structures and guardrails because of the self-repairing, natural oxide patina greatly reduces maintenance.
