A516 Grade 70: Characteristics, chemical composition, delivery status and application

A516 Grade 70 is a widely used carbon steel sheet, according to ASTM A516, designed for low to medium temperature pressure vessels and is highly preferred in the industrial sector due to its excellent properties. The A516 Grade 70 has excellent notch toughness and is able to maintain strength and toughness at lower temperatures. The tensile strength range is 485-620 MPa, the yield strength is not less than 260 MPa, and the elongation is at least 17% within 200mm. These characteristics make it perform well in high pressure and low temperature environments, while having good weldability for easy processing and manufacturing.

Chemical composition

The chemical composition of A516 Grade 70 strictly complies with ASTM A516 standards and mainly includes carbon (C) 0.27%-0.31%, manganese (Mn) 0.85%-1.20%, phosphorus (P) ≤0.025%, sulfur (S) ≤0.025% and silicon (Si) 0.15%-0.40%. Small amounts of carbon and manganese enhance the strength, while low phosphorus and sulfur content ensure the toughness and weldability of the steel plate. Additional elements can be added in trace amounts to meet specific requirements, as needed.

Delivery status

A516 Grade 70 delivery status is generally divided into two: thickness 1.5 inches or less (about 38mm) steel plate is supplied in hot rolled (As-Rolled), and thickness of more than 1.5 inches of steel plate is usually delivered in Normalized (Normalized). Normalizing further enhances the toughness and uniformity of the material by improving the grain structure, which is suitable for more demanding applications.

Scope of application

Due to its excellent performance, the A516 Grade 70 is widely used in the manufacture of pressure vessels for the oil, gas and chemical industries, such as boilers, storage tanks and heat exchangers. In addition, it has important uses in steam generators for power plants and modular equipment for Marine engineering. Its low temperature resistance and high strength characteristics make it an indispensable material choice in low to medium temperature environments.
