AR400 steel plate is a quenched and tempered steel and may be difficult to weld due to its high strength and hardenability.
During the welding process, the base steel around the weld of AR400 steel plate is heated and cooled rapidly, forming a heat affected zone (HAZ) with high hardness.
Any hydrogen in the weld metal of AR400 steel plate may diffuse into HAZ and cause hydrogen embrittlement, resulting in delayed crack or toe crack outside the weld.
In order to reduce the cracking in HAZ of AR400 steel plate as much as possible:
1. Use - H4 or - H2 low hydrogen consumables
2. The AR400 steel plate was preheated to slow down the cooling rate.
Note that excessive preheating may cause annealing of AR400 steel plate substrate
3. Cooling is slow. The longer the time at high temperature, the dissolved hydrogen will escape;
4. The weld bead is sharpened to minimize the residual weld stress;
5. The minimum strength filler metal meeting the design requirements shall be adopted; If a fillet weld is made, the weld may be too large to provide the specified strength;
6. Reduce the welding seam of AR400 steel plate as far as possible;
